The main difference between traditional Japanese candles (warōsoku) and Western candles lies in the materials. While Western candles are typically made from mineral oils or beeswax, Japanese candles use plant-based waxes such as haze (wax tree) and palm, along with wicks made from washi paper and igusa (rush). This makes them gentler on both people and the environment.

Takazawa Candle, which has been making Japanese candles since 1892, is based in Nanao City — the birthplace of Hasegawa Tōhaku, the painter famous for “Pine Trees,” a National Treasure. These candles are inspired by the natural scenery of the region, inviting the viewer to enjoy the quiet flicker of the flame as a moment of rest. They make a thoughtful gift: a way to give someone time to unwind.

Tōhaku is a candle named in honor of Hasegawa Tōhaku, the renowned painter active from the Azuchi-Momoyama period into the early Edo period.
