Koishiwara ware is said to have originated in 1682, when the third lord of the Chikuzen Fukuoka domain began producing pottery in imitation of Imari, which was then flourishing as a center of porcelain production. A defining characteristic of Koishiwara ware is the patterned surface created through techniques such as “tobikana” (literally, “flying plane”), in which the potter carves rhythmic marks while the vessel is turned on the wheel, and “hakeme,” in which sweeping brush strokes are applied — both producing distinctive, repeating motifs.
For this special commission, KIRI asked Shuzan Kiln, a workshop within the Koishiwara tradition known for using its own unique glazes to create a deep indigo tone, to produce an exclusive set of guinomi sake cups.

1682年に筑前福岡藩・3代目藩主が、磁器の生産が盛んだった伊万里にならい、焼物を作り始めたのが起源とされる小石原焼。小石原焼の大きな特徴は、器をろくろで回しながら刃先やハケなどを使い規則的に入れる「飛び鉋」や「刷毛目」という技法から生まれる模様が特徴とされています。
KIRIが今回特注でお願いしたぐい呑は、小石原焼の中でも独自の釉薬を用いて深み藍色を表現する秀山窯に製作を依頼しました。
