The key difference between Japanese and Western candles lies in their materials. While Western candles are typically made from mineral oils or beeswax, Japanese candles (warōsoku) use rapeseed (canola) wax, with wicks crafted from washi paper and rush grass. This makes them gentle on both people and the environment.
Since 1892, Takazawa Candle has been handcrafting warōsoku in Nanao City, birthplace of the renowned painter Hasegawa Tōhaku, celebrated for his Pine Trees folding screen. Inspired by the natural beauty of the region, these candles evoke a soft, living flame that brings calm and reflection.

和蝋燭と洋蝋燭の大きな違いは素材にあります。洋蝋燭が鉱物油や蜜蝋を主原料にするのに対して、こちらの和蝋燭は菜種油と、和紙とい草から取れる灯芯が使われ、人にも環境にもやさしい側面があります。
明治25年から和ろうそくを作り続けている高澤蝋燭がある七尾市は、「松林図屏風」で有名な長谷川等伯誕生の地です。同地の自然をモチーフにした蝋燭の炎のゆらぎを楽しむ、くつろぎの時間を贈り物にしてはいかがでしょう。
等伯は、その名の通り、安土桃山時代から江戸時代初期にかけて活躍した絵師、長谷川等伯にちなんだ和蝋燭です。
