Kukan Chuzo is a workshop established in 2009 by Hisao Iwashimizu, located in Mizusawa, Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture. Iwashimizu aims to create new value by combining traditional Nambu ironware manufacturing techniques with contemporary design approaches. At its core lies the philosophy of "Shuhari," which respects traditional practices while integrating new ideas and technologies to continue evolving.
For Iwashimizu, Kukan Chuzo’s products are not just tools; they are homages to past works and iron craftsmen, serving as mediators to convey the beauty of ancient times in a modern context. Driven by the mission to "express the essence of iron as a material," he has developed unique techniques to maximize the natural texture and beauty of iron.
His philosophy is to deeply understand the characteristics of the material and pursue the beauty that emerges from it. Growing up in an environment rich in Nambu ironware, and gaining experience at a design company before becoming a foundry artist, Iwashimizu's sensibilities are rooted in a deep respect for past masterpieces and traditions. As a result, Kukan Chuzo’s products not only possess aesthetic appeal but also bring richness and comfort to daily life through their use.
While his works are sometimes praised as modern designs, Iwashimizu does not aim for that. Instead, he strives to incorporate the excellence of past works into contemporary styles to convey their beauty. This philosophy and passion impart Kukan Chuzo’s products with a unique presence and charm.
Please note that the inside of the teapot is enameled, so it cannot be placed directly on an open flame. However, this makes it easier to enjoy the ironware more casually.
