The daruma doll, with its vivid red color, is a familiar symbol in Japan. This particular piece is a Takasaki Daruma, made in Takasaki, the region known for producing the greatest number of daruma dolls in the country.
One of its defining characteristics is its face: the eyebrows are stylized in the shape of cranes, and the beard in the shape of turtles. Both animals are traditional symbols of good fortune and long life, which is why daruma have long been cherished as auspicious objects.
The region flourished through sericulture and silk production, and the daruma came to be revered as a protective figure for silkworm-raising. From there it spread into ordinary households and became associated with making wishes and prayers for success.
The cold, dry “karakkaze” winter winds of the Jōshū region create ideal conditions for each step of production — layering paper, applying color, and finishing the details. In this environment, the craftsman’s skill quite literally gives life to each daruma, making it a traditional craft with spirit and presence.

鮮やかな赤色が印象的な、日本人には馴染み深いだるま。日本で最も多くの達磨の生産を誇る高崎で作られた高崎達磨です。
特徴は眉毛は鶴、髭は亀を表現され、吉祥、長寿の動物に例えられその縁起の良さから昔から親しまれてきました。
この地域は養蚕や絹織物産業で栄え、養蚕の守り神として祀られるようになり、やがて一般家庭へと広まり、さまざまな願かけが行なわれるようになっていきました。
冷たく乾燥した上州名物「空っ風」が、紙を張る、色を塗る、一つひとつの工程に適した風土で、職人の技がだるまに命をふきこんだ伝統工芸品です。
